A torrential downpour that lasted between Thursday and Friday has left a trail of destruction in Zaria, Kaduna State, displacing more than 470 children and destroying over 270 households across multiple communities.
A joint assessment team comprising the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and local government officials confirmed the scale of destruction after touring the affected areas.
The delegation, led by Zaria Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Jamil Ahmad Muhammad Jaga, visited Kofar Kuyanbana, Gangaren Mobil, Bayan Cinema (Tudun Wada Ward), Magume, Bako Zuntu, and Kamacha (Tukur Tukur Ward) — communities worst hit by the flood.
Triggered by heavy early-morning rains, the floods swept away foodstuffs, clothing, electronics, and other household items, leaving families stranded and in urgent need of help.
Despite the massive devastation, officials confirmed that no lives were lost, describing the outcome as an act of divine mercy considering the scale of the disaster.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Zaria Division, has begun distributing relief materials to displaced households but stressed that more intervention is urgently needed.
“Victims are facing worsening hardship without immediate assistance,” the humanitarian body warned, appealing to government agencies, NGOs, and philanthropists for support.
Authorities also assured that further damage assessments are ongoing, with plans to mobilize additional relief measures to cushion the impact on displaced families.
