A suspected cholera outbreak has occurred in several communities in Yola North, Adamawa State, following recent flooding. The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, confirmed the outbreak via a post on X on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
Affected areas include Alkalawa, Doubeli, Rumde, and Gwadabawa, with symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea observed in residents.
The disease is suspected to be linked to contaminated water resulting from the floods. NEMA has set up an isolation center, with over 100 people under observation and 7 confirmed deaths. In response, a sensitization campaign has been launched, and water-purifying chemicals are being distributed to affected households.
NEMA is working closely with the Adamawa State Government and health authorities to manage the outbreak while awaiting confirmation from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Residents have been advised to stay vigilant and report any symptoms to nearby health centers.
