The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested five Chinese nationals in Akwa Ibom State over their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.
The suspects were apprehended during a raid carried out by EFCC operatives following intelligence reports linking them to illegal extraction of mineral resources in the region.
The EFCC confirmed the arrests in a statement, revealing that the Chinese nationals were mining without proper permits and violating Nigeria’s mineral laws.
The operation, which took place in a remote area of the state, also uncovered evidence of unregulated mining equipment and significant environmental damage caused by the activities.
The EFCC’s spokesperson emphasized that illegal mining is a serious offense, contributing to economic losses and environmental degradation.
He assured that the suspects would be thoroughly investigated, and if found guilty, face prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.
This arrest comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to curb illegal mining operations and protect the country’s natural resources. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to cracking down on illegal activities that undermine Nigeria’s economy and ecological health.
