The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that it is significantly less favorable compared to the previous administrations of Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.
On Friday, NLC Spokesperson Benson Upah expressed concerns over the current government’s policies and their impact on Nigerians, highlighting the removal of the fuel subsidy as a major point of contention.
Upah remarked that former President Buhari was more accommodating and made considerable efforts to maintain stability and improve the quality of life for citizens.
He specifically condemned President Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy, arguing that the administration failed to consider the adverse consequences of the policy on the economy and the daily lives of Nigerians.
The NLC spokesperson also pointed to the unfavorable economic conditions under the Tinubu administration, contrasting the current exchange rate with that during Jonathan’s tenure, implying a deterioration in economic management. Upah noted that during Jonathan’s time, the exchange rate was more stable and beneficial to the populace compared to the current administration’s handling of the currency.
Upah’s comments reflect growing discontent among labor groups regarding the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, which they argue have led to increased hardship for the average Nigerian. The removal of the fuel subsidy has been particularly controversial, as it has resulted in a surge in fuel prices, contributing to a higher cost of living and inflation.
The NLC’s critique of the Tinubu administration adds to the broader discourse on the effectiveness of current economic strategies, with many calling for more sustainable and people-centered policies. The labor body’s stance underscores the need for government actions that prioritize the welfare of citizens amidst challenging economic times.
As the NLC continues to voice its disapproval, the Tinubu administration faces increasing pressure to address these concerns and implement measures that mitigate the economic burden on Nigerians. The organization’s comparison of Tinubu’s performance with those of his predecessors serves as a benchmark for evaluating the current government’s approach to governance and economic management.
