Chief Edwin Clark, leader of the Ijaw nation, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his alleged threats to set fire to states governed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Clark made this appeal during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, where he responded to Wike’s recent remarks made in Port Harcourt on August 31.
Wike, who has been in a public dispute with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, had warned the PDP Governors’ Forum to avoid intervening in the ongoing crisis between him and Fubara.
Clark condemned Wike’s statements, describing them as inflammatory and dangerous, and insisted that the Minister’s threats pose a significant risk to peace and security in PDP-controlled states.
However, Wike’s kinsmen, operating under the banner of Concerned Rivers Citizens for Good Governance, defended the Minister and criticized Clark for what they described as repeated and unwarranted attacks on Wike.
The group urged the elder statesman to cease his verbal assaults, accusing him of bias and of escalating tensions unnecessarily.
The clash between Clark and Wike’s supporters reflects deepening divisions within the PDP and among key political figures in the Niger Delta region.
Wike’s contentious remarks have fueled ongoing tensions within the party, as his influence continues to spark controversy both in his home state and at the national level.
Clark’s call for Wike’s arrest underscores the broader political conflict and the challenges faced by the PDP in managing internal disputes. The elder statesman emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order, urging the police to take necessary action against any threats that could destabilize PDP-controlled regions.
The Inspector General of Police has yet to respond to Clark’s request, and the situation continues to draw reactions from various political stakeholders.
The conflict between Wike and Fubara has captured public attention, highlighting the complexities of political alliances and rivalries within the PDP. As the situation unfolds, the party faces increased pressure to resolve internal conflicts and restore unity among its ranks.
