Plateau State Imposes 24-Hour Curfew in Jos-Bukuru Metropolis to Restore Order Amidst Recent Unrest

The Plateau State Government has announced a 24-hour curfew in the Jos-Bukuru Metropolis, effective from midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

This decision, made by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, aims to restore law and order following recent breakdowns in security in the area.

According to a statement by Mr. Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs to Governor Mutfwang, the curfew was imposed after a thorough review of the recent unrest.

The violence was reportedly perpetrated by individuals who exploited the nationwide protests to cause chaos and terrorize innocent citizens.

Governor Mutfwang’s decision followed incidents where armed criminals, wielding daggers, machetes, and other weapons, looted shops and restaurants along Bauchi Road and Zololo Junction in Jos North Local Government Areas. These actions disrupted public peace and safety, prompting the need for immediate intervention.

The Governor stressed that the curfew is intended to protect citizens and restore order. He urged residents to comply fully with the curfew to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the affected areas. Security agencies have been directed to enforce the curfew strictly and maintain vigilance to prevent further violence.

Governor Mutfwang also warned against any additional attempts to destabilize the region, stating that those found engaging in or planning further acts of terror will face severe legal consequences. He emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and proactive measures by security forces to uphold public order.

In his statement, Governor Mutfwang expressed appreciation for the support and cooperation of Plateau State citizens, particularly the clergy, who have played a significant role in maintaining peace during the protests. He praised their commitment to peace and unity, which he believes will help in building a progressive Plateau.

The Governor’s address highlighted the need for a unified effort to restore calm and work towards a more stable and secure environment. He reiterated his gratitude to the citizens for their peaceful conduct and called on everyone to continue upholding this culture as the state navigates through these challenging times.
