Fuel Scarcity Hits Nigeria: Long Queues, Black Market Prices, and Supply Disruptions Persist

Currently, Nigeria is experiencing a significant fuel scarcity affecting several regions, including Lagos, Ogun, Abuja, and Niger states. Many fuel depots across the country are dry, leading to widespread queues at filling stations and causing frustration among motorists.

The situation has led to a surge in black market activity, with prices for petrol soaring as high as N1,300 to N1,500 per litre in some areas of Lagos and Ogun states. Long lines at fuel stations began to build up on Friday and have continued to worsen throughout the weekend.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has attributed the fuel shortage to a disruption in the discharge operations of several vessels that are crucial for supply.

NNPC Ltd’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, stated that the company is working diligently with all stakeholders to resolve the supply issues and restore normal distribution.

Despite these assurances, the situation has not improved significantly. Reports from various correspondents across the country on Sunday revealed that fuel queues remain extensive and continue to cause significant inconvenience.

The scarcity underscores ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s fuel supply chain and the impact on daily life for many citizens.
