FCT Police Commissioner Appeals to Abuja Residents to Avoid August 1 Protest, Citing Security Concerns

The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bennett Igweh, has strongly appealed to residents of Abuja to refrain from participating in the nationwide protest scheduled for August 1. This appeal comes in the wake of planned demonstrations in response to the country’s economic hardships.

In his plea, CP Igweh emphasized the significant security efforts made by the police to ensure the safety of FCT residents. He described the police’s recent efforts, including their work to combat crime in neighboring states such as Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Niger, which he believes have contributed to the safety of Abuja. Igweh also highlighted the personal sacrifices made by the police, mentioning the recent loss of several officers in the line of duty.

He expressed concern that participating in the protest could jeopardize the hard-won security and stability in the FCT. Igweh likened the situation to a lion that does not destroy its own den, urging residents to appreciate the improvements and safety measures put in place rather than contributing to potential unrest.

CP Igweh acknowledged the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure in the FCT, such as better roads and general urban development. He noted that while there are still challenges, significant progress has been made, and he urged residents to recognize these advancements.

In his address, Igweh stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability. He pleaded with residents to act maturely and appreciate the sacrifices made for their safety. He concluded by urging the public to allow those organizing the protests to do so without involving the FCT, reinforcing that their collective efforts are vital in keeping Abuja safe and secure.
