Oyo State Confident in Implementing New N70,000 Minimum Wage, Says Governor’s Promise Remains Firm

The Oyo State government has expressed confidence in its ability to implement the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage set by the federal government. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the chief press secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, communicated this assurance to The Nation on July 19.

Olanrewaju highlighted that during the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration, Governor Makinde had committed to adhering to whatever the national minimum wage would be.

Currently, Oyo State pays a total of N55,000 to its workers, consisting of a base minimum wage of N30,000 and an additional wage award of N25,000, with no outstanding payments.

Olanrewaju stated that increasing the total payment from N55,000 to N70,000 would be manageable for the state government, reflecting its readiness to meet the new wage requirements without significant difficulty.
