The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) have launched a nationwide protest over the non-payment of their salaries for the past four months.
The protest, which began early in the morning at 7:30 am, saw union members gathering at Unity Fountain in Abuja before marching to the Federal Ministries of Education and Labour and Employment.
The protest has caused significant disruptions to administrative operations in universities and inter-university centers across the country.
Peters Adeyemi, the General Secretary of NASU, stated that the unions plan to present letters to both ministries, demanding the immediate payment of their withheld salaries. The workers are appealing to the Federal Government to settle the outstanding payments owed to them.
Despite previous meetings with the government, the unions reported no progress in resolving the issue of withheld salaries.
The protest underscores the frustration and financial hardship faced by university staff, who have been left without pay for an extended period. The unions hope that this demonstration will prompt the government to address their grievances and release the owed salaries.
