Northern Group Plans August 1 Nationwide Protest to Address Regional Issues and Advocate for Reforms

A northern group, the Northern Initiative for Growth, has formally notified the Inspector General of Police at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja about their intention to hold a peaceful protest across Northern Nigeria on August 1, 2024.

The protest aims to address pressing regional issues and advocate for meaningful reforms. The group emphasized their democratic right to peacefully highlight critical issues affecting their region and called for maximum security and order during the event.

They requested the deployment of sufficient police personnel along designated protest routes and urged law enforcement to respect participants’ constitutional rights, exercise restraint, and avoid excessive force. The group expressed confidence in the Nigeria Police Force’s ability to ensure a peaceful protest and maintain public safety.

Additionally, Omoyele Sowore, the convener of #RevolutionNow, has released a list of 14 demands from Nigerians to President Bola Tinubu’s administration, aimed at addressing governance challenges.

These demands include scrapping the 1999 Constitution, making lawmaking a part-time endeavor, paying a minimum wage of at least N250,000 monthly, investing heavily in education, releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, renationalizing publicly owned enterprises, reinstating a corruption-free subsidy regime, probing past and present leaders for looted funds, and restructuring Nigeria to accommodate its diversity and regional development.

These demands are part of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria campaign and the planned “Days of Rage” protests scheduled from late July to August 2024.
