George Floyd’s Family Calls on Congress to Pass Police Reform, 4 Years After His Murder

On the fourth anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, his family and Democratic lawmakers renewed their call for Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

Philonise Floyd, George’s brother, and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee emphasized the need for police accountability and reform at a news conference.

The bill, initially passed by the House in 2020 but stalled in the Senate, was reintroduced by Jackson Lee. It aims to hold law enforcement accountable for misconduct and implement training and policy reforms.

Rep. Ilhan Omar stressed the necessity of a national standard for equal protection under the law.

George Floyd’s murder by Derek Chauvin, who was sentenced to over 22 years in prison, ignited global protests against racial injustice and police brutality.

The Floyd family remains active in advocacy, with Floyd’s uncle, Selwyn Jones, co-founding a charity and participating in activism.

Despite doubts about the bill’s passage, the family plans to continue honoring Floyd’s legacy with a celebration in Charlotte, North Carolina.
