Following a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday, the Senegalese government announced its decision to replace French with Arabic as an official language.
This move is seen as a significant political shift in Senegal, following the recent presidential election victory of the young opposition leader, Bassirou Faye.
In a televised speech on March 26th, the president-elect emphasized Senegal’s commitment to honoring its international obligations and maintaining friendly and reliable partnerships with bilateral and multilateral partners.
Faye highlighted the Senegalese people’s choice to depart from the existing regime, while also expressing intentions to bring about reforms within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
