On Wednesday, President Joe Biden signed legislation that threatens the existence of TikTok, a popular video-streaming software, in the US.
The regulation requires TikTok’s parent firm, ByteDance, to renounce its participation in the app within one year or risk a ban. This law constitutes the most major step taken by the United States in its continuing technological conflict with China.
Despite the possible consequences for TikTok, immediate interruptions to the app’s functioning seem doubtful. Legal and logistical problems in marketing the software are anticipated to postpone any immediate consequences. The legislation was inserted into a larger package that contains international funding for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.
