The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State experienced a breach resulting in the escape of 118 inmates on Wednesday, April 24.
The damage to the facility, caused by heavy rainfall, facilitated their escape, as confirmed by Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, in a statement on Thursday.
Duza highlighted the significant structural damage inflicted by the downpour on the custodial centre. This included a breach in the perimeter fence, through which the inmates were able to flee.
“In response, the Nigerian Correctional Service, activated its recapturing protocols, collaborating with other security agencies to recover 10 of the escaped inmates.
“However, efforts to recapture the remaining fleeing inmates are said to be ongoing.”
