Abia Assembly passes bill to stop pension for ex-governors, deputies

The Abia State House of Assembly approved a pension freeze for previous governors and deputies on Tuesday.

Uchanna Okoro, Majority Leader and Arochukwu State Constituency member, sponsored “A Bill (H.A.B 11:) for a Law to Revoke The Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected therewith.”

After its first and second readings, committee of the whole consideration, and third reading in plenary, Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa declared the bill passed.

Emeruwa thanked his colleagues for their support in abolishing the Law after the bill passed.

He said the bill will cut state governance costs and boost development.

Once signed by the governor, the bill would be called the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024.”

The speaker said the bill would take effect immediately after the governor signs it.

The measure eliminates pension benefits for previous governors and their deputies, according to NAN.
