On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu issued an order to open the land and air borders with the Niger Republic.
His spokeswoman, Ajuri Ngelale, verified this in a statement.
This, according to Ngelale, is in accordance with the decisions made at the special summit of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja on February 24, 2024.
Other sanctions on the country were also ordered to be lifted immediately by Tinubu.
You may remember that the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided to remove financial restrictions imposed on Guinea, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, and the Republic of Niger.
Closing the land and air borders between Nigeria and the Niger Republic, as well as imposing an ECOWAS no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from the Niger Republic, are among the sanctions that have since been removed on the Republic of Niger.
Along with resuming all financial and commercial activities, Tinubu also unfroze all service transactions, including the provision of energy and utility services to the Niger Republic.
The president has ordered the lifting of the embargo on the Republic of Niger’s assets held by ECOWAS central banks as well as those held by commercial banks, state companies, and parastatals.
“Suspension of Niger from all financial assistance and transactions with all financial institutions, particularly EBID and BOAD.
“Travel bans on government officials and their family members also stand lifted,” the Statement added.
The gesture was also extended to Republic of Guinea with the lifting of financial and economic sanctions.
